ASME Section VIII - Div 02 Vessel

07/07/2009 1:54 PM

Hello Friends, We are designing a Div.02 Vessel as per 2007 edition, addenda08, I have some doubts in this process of getting approval from Registered Professional Engineer(RPE). Can we start manufacturing of Vessel before getting approval of Mechanical Design Report from RPE? Is there any restriction by code? As per new code any Engineer with sufficient experience in Pressure Vessel design can approve the UDS and MDR provided that it is acceptable to client, is there any additional requirement on the qualification of the approving authority?

  • Please review Annex 2A and 2B.
  • Are you aware of the significance of the User's Design Specification and that it should come from the actual user/client (or third party independent)?
  • The Mechanical Design Report is only finalized at the end of the contract, which includes As Built drawings.
  • Does your company have a U2 stamp/program?
  • You should confirm everything with your local regulator/jurisdiction/Authorized Inspector.

Is U2 code stamp required for that vessel as an owner request?

Does your organization hold certificate of authorization U2?

Whatever your answer, for U2 it is a must for PE to review all design drawings and design calculations before starting any fabrication work to avoid any problems arise after work completion where there is no chance to repeat the work.

Thanks a lot, Xmech, Abdel. Our client has specified this requirement of Div.02 vessel. We have got the UDS from client, now we have to complete this Vessel within a short period of time. For this purpose we want to start fabrication as soon as possible, can we start fabrication on the basis of apporval given by client's technical consultant? As approval from RPE may take a lot of time. Does code has put any such restriction? As Xmech says should the RPE approval for Mechanical Design report be taken at the end of contract with as built drawings which is supported by clauses Annexure 2B? Secondly the Vessel is not too critical to design and do not have cyclic loading.
