As with any venture where a finished viable product is the desired end result there is a defined system to be followed.

Concept; where the idea is formulated.

Specification: where the broad idea is nurtured to a more cohesive idea.

Research: where the cohesive idea is coalesced into its probable form. Tempered by various and sundry government regulations, as well as existing products or patents applicable to your concept

Prototype: Where the concept is excersized as a proof of concept, along with sorting out the problems associated with a new product.

Patenting: Where the proof of concept has its intellectual property protected. Note this does not apply to China where the concept of intellectual property is discouraged.

Venture Capital: Once the IP is protected by Patent you can then sell it to Venture Capatalists who will generate much vapourware to convince other people with spare money to "invest" it in your concept.

Development: This is where with VC funding you can decide how best to manufacture them. It is also where you need to prove that your product meets or exceeds the relavent regulations.

Marketing: Once the Venture Capitalists have created a financial backbone for your concept you now need to market it to potential buyers. This allows you to decide on the quantity required to satisfy demand.

Manufacturing: This is where it gets really heavy, you need to arrange for supplies of raw materials, sort out what you can get made offsite. and arrange for the necessary equipment and staff to do the nuts and bolts.

And thats only the beginning.

If you live in a country like Australia, and are not an annointed son then you will need to deal with all manner of disapproving apparatchiks. While they may not necessarily actively stop you. You'll find yourself carrying an awful lot of vaseline about and start having a funny walking gait in order to make your dream happen.

What sort of engine do you want to make? Electric, Steam, Petrol, Diesel, LPG, CNG, or Utopian?
