Wiring US Plug - UK style

07/12/2009 5:18 AM

Hi. I have a Battery charger that has an US style plug on. It takes 100-240v~ 50/60Hz Max 150 mA. I live in the UK and was wondering how to wire it up. Would I need to wire the earth onto it anywhere? I have previously used a 12v adaptor and the 12v port on the top to charge my camera batteries (It is a lithium battery pack).

The charger is Class II insulated (AKA double insulated), and doesn't need an earth connection.

Your only concern is how to connect the live & neutral to the power input pins safely. I'd suggest an adapter plug.

Two little bits of wire it is! :D

Is the pin on the left of the US plug the neutral and the one on the right the live?

I, once, have used a connecting power cord with ends terminated with plugs. I still don't know why I have been fired

Was working on site recently, & had to PAT1 test a bit of kit (1500mm x 1000mm x 250mm steel wallbox, fed from a fused 13A spur. Method involves temporarily re-wiring mains power input using a length of mains cord & a plug. I didn't have the makin's with me so went scrounging in the handyman's den. I found two cordsets on a shelf, each made up with 2m of 3 core 13A cable to mains plug - cables had bare stripped & twisted ends.

Don't know what the hell he used them for - thought it better not to ask!

1 PAT = Portable Appliance Test. (Often wondered how this term can be applied to a wallbox as described above! Would almost need a forklift to carry it around, and that after unscrewing it from the wall.)

"Is the pin on the left of the US plug the neutral and the one on the right the live?" - doesn't matter in this app.

(Sorry, didn't notice this bit.)

yes, maybe putting 230v through two small pieces of wire isn't the best idea...

If it is a polarized connector the neutral will have a wider blade at the end. The hot blade will have a constant width. If both are the same width it doesn't matter which is connected to the neutral and which to the hot.

The square-within-a-square symbol marked on the case indicates that it is double-insulated, and doesn't require an earth connection. The CE marking indicates pan-European approval for use.

Simply plug the thing into an overseas→UK travel adapter, and plug the travel adapter into a BS1363 13A domestic socket. "Robert is your mother's brother".

Get someone in the USA to send you the adapter or try to buy one at a british airport.

The biggest problem using the adapter is that it is possible to actually put your finger on a live pin with many of them.....a tiewrap to keep the two parts together at all times is a good idea........be careful.....

If you use an IEC (kettle) lead and some force, it will fit on these pins. I didn't say this and so am posting anonymously.

After much regret, I have bought an adaptor. That is another £3 that could have been spent elsewhere...

... should've gone to the pound shop (or even the 'ninety-nine pee' shop).

It costs more to drive to there than to go onto eBay and buy one! My nearest one is over 20 miles away :D
