Need Detailed Help on Fixing a Broken Sennheiser md421u5. Please Help!

07/12/2009 11:45 AM

i have no experience with repairing broken microphones. currently need detailed help fixing a dead md421u5, shure beta58a and sm57. i took apart the 421 and i seems like the copper coils in the capsule are too loosely wound. is there a specific way i should wind them back? i need a picture or video to show me, if there's one even out there. and the casing won't stay closed when reassembled. also the bass roll off switches aren't clicking into place, rather moving like a loose volume knob. as you can see, i'm having a very hard time with this. anyone wanna keep me from offing myself? love to all who can help brad

Sounds like it is time to buy some new ones....

You probably made it worse when you took it apart....

I've fixed many a mic but draw the line at bothering about rewinding the coils. In the main the switches usually fail first and sometimes best to just remove the switch and connect the wiring direct. It's a common problem not getting them fitting back together properly too - that's why you'll see lots of old Sure mics taped up!

Buy a new one - they're not that expensive and you might get a second hand one very cheap.

It doesn't sound lke a do-it-yourself project. Contact the factory to see about repair.

Whilst I have re-soldered broken lead-out wires this is very tricky. I doubt you can rewind or refix the coil. The clearance in the magnet gap is so tight any alteration or re gluing will probably lead to the coil rubbing causing severe distortion. Fitting a new capsule would be the only option.

Shure and Sennheiser are good for supplying spares and the MD421 and Beta 58 are well worth fixing given their price new. The SM57 is more doubtful unless the body and grill are in pristine condition as they are not so expensive and easily available secondhand.

Incidentally if the Beta58 coil is coming apart it would be worth checking it is a genuine Shure mic, there are a lot of counterfeits around which are much less reliable and the Shure spares may not even fit a counterfeit. The Shure website has a section on recognising counterfeits.

I'am one who love Sennheiser Wireless Headphones but i don't have experince with fixing, too. I've bought a low-price headphone(Sennheiser RS120) on amazon.com. It make me easy to play aorund while i'm listening to my favorite music. If you are interested in buying some headphones, I reccomend Sennheiser Wireless Headphones RS120.
