Photos of Bubbles Popping in Slow-Motion

07/13/2009 10:17 AM

I thought these were beautiful and wanted to share:

Photographer Richard Heeks used a slow-motion camera with a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second to capture the different stages of a soap bubble popping. A preview below, but check out the rest here.

How about bubbles versus arrows? Or balloons versus arrows?

Some very nice photos.

Taken with "a slow-motion camera with a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second"

The 1/500 second shutter speed has to be wrong.

That seems to me to be way too slow to "stop the action".

It doesn't appear that any supplemental (flash) lighting was used, as there are no specular highlights visible in the bubble emulsion.

Perhaps 1/5,000 second (?)

Agree, no way that's 1/500th sec.

Here's a little video of a balloon at 1/600th sec : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N3hm6ji6AU

(fast fwd to 1:00)

My first impression of this picture, was the tip of one of the tungsten carbide drill bits I am using here at work.

Nice pix of the bubbles tho ;o)

Remarkable how the loss of surface tension creates dynamic patterns that seem to organize themselves in distinct lines.......and then turn into spheres at the end.

Awesome! The reflected images on the 1st & second shot and their reversal reminded me of some of M.C. Escher's work.

Here is a scene from a movie called The Lost Marbles. If I could only find the start button.

Hi

I'm the person who took those bubble photos. Just found this forum, so thought I'd fill in what might be the gaps. These are separate photos, not cut from a video sequence or suchlike - as people might think. They are 1/500 of a second. I was surprised that 1/500 was quick enough, but there you go. Yes, used only natural light too, but the light comes from the reflected things, like the building and the cloudy sky. I used a fairly high IS0 (800) to get the shutter speed. Check them out of flickr if you like, where you see view the EXIF stats. Ah, I can't paste the link here, but go to www.flickr.com and then plug in my name "Richard Heeks" and you'll find me there.

Thanks

Richard
