2000 Chevy Cavalier - Acceleration Problems

07/13/2009 6:36 PM

My 2000 Chevy Cavalier wouldn't start this morning. More accurately, it would start but only if the gas pedal was half way down or more. Even then it ran like it was missing on half of the cylinders. At idle, the cars sputters and dies. The engine ran very smooth yesterday when I parked it. Any ideas?

I am not exactly familiar with the 2000 Cavalier but if thats one of the engines that used the dual ignition coil packs instead of a distributer you may have had a coil pack failure and are in fact running on half an engine!

Its just a guess though.

  • Knackered distributor?
  • Knackered spark plug lead?
  • Knackered spark plug?
  • Timing gone awry?
  • Blocked idle jet in the carburettor?

I replaced one of the ingnition coils yesterday and nothing changed. They're only $25 so I think I'll replace the other and see what that does. Also, I changed spark plugs and a few of them were pretty well oil soaked which leads me to believe the engine has some more issues than I previously thought.

This is just some more hopefull speculation but a few years ago one of the company vehicles where I worked at started burning oil like crazy. The local service shop said the engine was junk and needed to be replaced. One other worker and I looked the the vehicle over good and found the oil was coming in through the PCV valve. The valve had stuck wide open and the engine was sucking its own oil out!

A $8 PCV valve and a set of plugs had the vehicle running like new and not using a quart of oil in a 3000 mile oil change period.

Just a guess though.

PS 2000 model vehicles are fuel injected not carburated.
