IGV - Centrifugal Compressor

07/14/2009 3:30 AM

Dear All,

I am just thinking How & why we are getting different performance curves with IGV Angle +10 and (-) 10 degree.

As at 0 (Zero) degree - IGV will be fully open.

Now, I move +/- 10 Degree on both side, IGV Opening area will remain same, than why we have diff. operating curves.

What I have observed is, (For Fixed values of Diff. head), Capacity will increase for IGV Position +10 degree, 0 degree to (-) 10 Degree.

How can It be possible, If the IGV Opening is same at both +10 and (-)10 degree IGV Position.

Requesting experts to share your views.

With regards,

Nilesh.

It is not a simple case of open and closed, you are changing the angle of attack for the rotor inlets.

Incidentally, the whole purpose of IGV's is to reduce efficiency to avoid a surge condition.

Check the manufaturers specification for operating curves. (who is the manufacturer? Compressor model number?)

Kindly elaborate How it works to get diff. operating points (means operating curves).

"Guest" was correct in mentioning that the vane position changed the angle of attack of the incoming gas. The "Pre-rotation swirl" created by on of the IGV positions meant that the gas had less directional change at the impeller inlet, and therefore slightly higher efficiency
