Accident Videos or Pictures

07/16/2009 7:28 PM

All,

I have been asked to help update our OH&S training module in our induction training.

OH&S is a rather dry & uninteresting subject ("Cause that will never happen to me..") and I want to liven things up abit ('xcuse the pun).

In order to do this, I would like to get hold of some videos or pictures of accidents and\or there repercussions, to get the point across, from industrial or domestic situations preferably. Not so much the (Guy on the train scenario).

My preference is for Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical.
e.g. A guy carrying a aluminium ladder into power lines.

If anyone has any links or files that they can share, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,
Sapper.

Alright! I suspect this thread will get very fun and interesting. I have nothing useful to share but I look forward to those responses that do.

'You Tube' has some very interesting (and gruesome) stuff on 'electrocution'. I have also seen 'electrical safety' procedurals regarding 'electrical explosions'. OSHA may be able to help. Google all 'within'. Most power generation companies have a link to what not to do.

NO, don't touch that!

US Navy has several films in their collection for training purposes. I believe if you ask them they will be happy to comply as they love being of service to those helpless civilians! I should know as I spent eleven years under water in submarines as chief engineer in 688 class boats out of Pearl Harbor!

Hello Saper,

Google accidental electrocution

There is some on youtube also. The one I recall is of a man on top of a train, he raises his arms and is pretty much roasted. Think he may have a mental problem or he is drunk?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en-gb&ei=tm1hSs6-NOKfjAfU8rzvDw&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=accidental+electrocution&spell=1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gucdD492M6s&feature=related

This has a demonstration of the power by a professional touch the power line set up in a building. At one point the thing touched and the temperature was 11,000 degrees, I am not sure whether it was celsius or Fahrenheit. (Sorry about the spelling).

You may like to take a look at this youtube clip and others. This man tries to measure the volts under the power lines people are working under. He is measuring in volts per metre.. "Extreme" power is 50 volts per metre. His machine went up to 1000 volts and the machine was still measuring!

The Magnetic field in the same spot was over 450 and the "extreme" range is from 500 Newton Telsla. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhyh7ugGjFc

Check these out.

Re: Accident Videos or Pictures

It seems to me that the gruesome examples in training videos are hard to come by.

I get my videos from the same place that services our first aid boxes. They give good information but don't give any graphic details.

Before I do a safety training meeting with the shops, I do a little internet surfing on the subject. Sometimes I find some pretty good articles to share. One article was really good. It was about a maintenance technician for an oil company that went out on a call and wasn't following safety procedures very well and a fire broke out caused by his truck engine not being shut down and his third degree burns from not wearing his clothing properly.

He explained how he wore sunglasses to the safety meetings so people couldn't tell if he was asleep.

He also spoke of another guy at the meetings that always paid attention and was a stickler for safety.

He also explained how his injuries not only cost him but his whole family. He knew that outside they where sympathetic to him but inside they thought he was an idiot for getting hurt the way he did.

When ever I give a meeting I try to relate personal experiences with the audience. I also keep track of what injuries that have taken place at our company. Things like metal shavings in the eye, two guys getting their fingers cut off, one guy getting his teeth knocked out because the guard wasn't on the table saw, another guy having both of his legs busted because of improper bracing on the machinery he was standing inside of. One guy tearing airlines mounted on the ceiling with the mast of a forklift. People dropping machinery while operation the forklift.

I try to bring it home so they know that things do happen and that it's only a matter of time for each of them. Yes, I name names. I even share accidents that have happened to me.

If you really want to get the message across, you make it personal and from the heart.

Hello Jan...

I could not agree with what you say and the importance of these safety issues.

Perhaps he will not fall asleep on any future meetings?

I realise these meeting can become systematic, and something one feels you have to attend, and that wrongly, thinking 'it will never happen to me', but your post proves the point.............. it can and does!

Hello Jan.

It is amazing how the omission of a single word can change the entire meaning of a sentence? Believe me when I say English is my native tongue![p} It was a silly mistake and one I should have noticed and rectified before sending though.

I understand what you want. I've spent some time searching for videos showing the same things.

Here's a safety training video article that might interest you.

Safety training film a new approach

I linked the article and on that page is a link to the video itself.

Rotten.com <---NOT safe for work. Just a bunch of really Gory accident pictures. Haven't been there in years, much of it will turn your stomach (If it is still like it was 2-3 years ago, but it may have changed, as i have no desire to look at it myself.)

remember electrocution means death by electric shock; if someone tells you they were electrocuted then they are lying they only had a shock no matter how severe.

newspapers (and occasionally the TUC) make this mistake

Ahh yes, good point, that word is misused (taking a wild guess) 80% of the time. I myself have used it in a sentence such as:

Holy $h!t, I just Electrocuted the crap out of myself!

Which is completely wrong, as you stated If I had electrocuted myself, I would not be able to yell profanities.
