AC Plug Sockets for DC Use

07/20/2009 12:01 AM

I have a 125 A 3 Pole 750 V AC Plug and socket.

I want to use this on a 24 V DC sytem for 125 A DC application.

Can I use it, if no, what are the reasons?

It is for own use, but as per the rules.

Will the Standards allow this.

Type qualified for use. Potential for cross connection to an AC source by someone else.

Arc shielding/suppression if disconnected under load. DC can maintain an arc longer that AC voltage. And DC conductors typically are larger that ac for given current.

This is just what I can think of for now without getting in to theory and electrical codes.

Check the Wikipedia article on plugs and sockets used worldwide. If there is any risk of the connection being made to the wrong type of power source, then discard the connector and choose another method of connection.

If you are asking if it would work then it's a yes. If you're asking if it's a good idea well...not really if there is a chance of someone else plugging into it expecting an AC source or plugging it into an AC source. There are a lot of "plugs" and "connectors" made specifically for DC. I would suggest trying one of those.

Good luck!

THANKS. THIS PLUG IS TO BE USED IN A CLASSIFIED AREA(HAZARDOUS ZONE 2) AND I COULD NOT FIND A SOURCE WHO CAN SUPPLY CERTIFIED PLUGS, THAT IS WHY THIS PROBLEM.

Then in this situation, no you cannot use a plug and socket set that is not rated for 24V DC even if it is rated for 125A AC.

There is only one company I am aware of that makes suitable plugs and sockets

http://www.vantagexp.com/

Be aware that they are expensive.

Alternatively there MAY be a special clause in the standards you are using that MAY allow you to use AC rated plugs and sockets in certain situations that MAY be relevant to your application. It is a possibility for you to carefully look into (I am assuming you have the relevant standards with which to look at). Either that or try and design the plugs and sockets out, or move the connection point to a safe area. Those are about all the possible options you have.

Let us know what you come up with, that's why we are here.

Yes, Vintage is definitely making the size of plug and sockets I wanted for DC application. and they responded well, thanks to recession.

still I am convincing the end user to go for different connection.
