Multiaxes Swash-Plate Angle in a Plunger Pump

07/23/2009 1:37 AM

I have seen a strange plunger pump. Normally swash-plate angle is about one axis (15~18 deg), but some have multiple axes such as 17 deg about x-axis and 2 deg about y-axis. I have heard that the pump is used in aerospace. Does anybody know the reason of multiaxes angle?

Probably to provide clearance from adjacent components and structure, and/or provide a more conducive route for hoses/wiring and maintenance access.

Gearboxes on aircraft turbine engines are amazing crowded with components and must fit in incredibly tight spaces. A degree or two can make a big difference in getting wrench access to service the unit.

Seeing the installed pump would probably answer your question immediately.

Hi Hooker

I think the OP was saying that the swash plate had two axis of adjustment NOT the pump casing! It seems strange to me and I've seen a lot of swash plate pumps!
