More Rail Electrification for Britain

07/23/2009 4:15 AM

The government just has announced plans to electrify part of the rail routes heading to the west of London out as far as Swansea. The task will involve substantial civil works to tunnels and bridges, electrical works to install the overhead cable, and the ordering of new trains.

Seems like the way to go for energy concerns in the future. Wish we in the US could follow suit.

I agree, wish there was an extensive rail system like the UK's in the U.S. The wheels of bureaucracy turn so slowly. The promised commuter train line between northeastern PA and New York City (20 years in the planning!) has been bogged down by expensive, extensive feasibility studies. Now it's being held up by some blither about 12 miles of needed track repairs in NJ, and who's going to pay for it.....The waste of time and funds is criminal.

Anyway, good for Britain! Just disappointed that Lord Adonis doesn't live up to his mythological moniker.

Extensive? Pah! It was once of much greater extent.

Yes, that's a lot of closures along the way listed in your link (thanks for the info). Guess it's all relative (or the rail is just greener on the other side). The UK has a relatively more extensive rail system.

Travel to continental Europe and see the difference between the train network in Great Britain and Ireland. Both Great Britain and Ireland are probably 100years behind continental Europe, its sad really.
