Ionizing Helium

Hello out there, can someone inform me on a (low cost) methods to ionize Helium molecules at moderate temperatures. Preferably with some source of photons, laser maybe.

Any information on the subject appreciated.

My old (49th edition) of the CRC Handbook lists ionization potentials for He at 24.481 V for +1 and 54.403 V for +2 ions. The method cited was vacuum UV spectroscopy. This suggests that a proper UV source for the photons may be sufficient; I believe UV lasers are now available. These +1 or +2 ionization potentials for He are higher than for any other element, which is consistent with its position as the "inert" gas of lowest atomic weight. You are trying to strip off either one or both electrons from the innermost shell, when the shell is filled and stable. That is a tough job. Because of the high ionization potentials you would be using, I would watch for contamination of your gas stream by any other material that can become a gas. I would imagine He+ or He++ would be very strong oxidizers, so be careful.

Dear imueller,

Energies used for vacuum UV 24.481eV is about 60nm wavelength, which is not easy to get. Energy 54.403eV has wavelength much shorter. Only vacuum UV sources of very high energy will have such facility to have a beam of such high energy. Low pressure and high voltage discharge can be used to ionize He gas. This can be achieved at mbar pressure level.

You could use the plasma discharge technique. Get hold of an ozone generator and pass the He through it. It will probably recombine right away but if you are looking at large quantity, this can be it.

Of coarse, the reaction you are looking for will appear in the small gap.

Similarly, the high voltage setup of a neon type discharge tube could do. You can buy them from scientific demonstration stores. They might have helium tubes ready to use.

Ionizing Helium can be accomplished using RF energy. Under strong vacuum conditions coupling a 1500 Watts source of !356 Mhz radio signal will ionize the Helium. Check into reactive ion etching processes used in the semiconductor manufacturing processing.

I can do the same thing at 100 watts at 13.56 MHz in one of my plasma trainers, at around 100milliltorr. More power means more ions.

Why do you need to do this?
