HT Cable and LT Cable for LT Single-Phase Loads

07/26/2009 7:58 AM

We have a Diesel Generator(DG) Set of 110 kVA installed in office-cum-residential campus. Soon we are going to replace the same with a 250 kVA DG Set. The LT Cable to the residential feeder is of size 3.5 C x 120 sq mm Al Conductor PVC Armoured at the DG panel end but terminated to the residential panel as 3.5C x 95 sq mm (There is a joint in-between) hence effectively, the cable size is 95 sq mm. A spare HT Cable (3Cx120 sq mm PILCA) is available. Can it be put in parallel to the existing cable. Measurements of current values on the existing LT cable at different points of time were observed and it was found that the maximum current reaches upto 200 A (per phase). The load to be fed is single-phase load.

.....and how long are these cables, and of what construction? Also, are they in free air or are they buried in something?

What does the local electrical code have to say on the topic?

British Standard 7671 can be called upon readily to use for cable sizing.

The total run of cables is around 300 metres, burried underground. The basic question pertains to whether HT cable can be used in parallel with existing LT cable to supply LT load?

It depends on the code in your area. The NEC requires the parallel cable to be the same size. In you situation, the amperage will not be the same on each cable. The larger cable will carry a greater share of the load.
