Generator Problems

07/27/2009 11:27 AM

My company has a deisel generator. We have had a strange problem. The last 3 times the power has been transfered to the generator due to a power outage. It starts at 47Hz and then slowly climbs to 60Hz where it should be. The last time it drained the UPS batteries to our server room....not good. We have had a a deisel tech look the engine over and after about 100 tests we can not repeat the problem. However 3 seperate emergancy transferes and it failed. We are replaceing the govoner but i am not sure if that is the issue. It is an oil govoner with its own oil supply. Any ideas would be great. Kinda struggling here.

Hard to say with so little information. It sounds like your generator fires up but doesn't ever disconnect from the UPS batteries used to start it.

Have you checked your source/transfer switch?

Trouble shooting is difficult unless you give all information.

Please answer the following;

1) capacity of the dg set.

2) Engine model

3) Does it start

4) after starting how long it takes to reach required speed 1500/1800 rpm -50hz/60hz

5) After reaching the required speed does it generate the required voltage

6)after generating voltage does change over takes place?

7) Why should your ups batteries get drained, normally ups back up will be 20/30 mins

8 )Does it mean power outage was there for more than 20/30 minutes?

Please furnish the answers, if required we may ask some more questions to find out suitable solution

Thank you for you response.

The dg set is 375KVA

The engine is a kholer I am not close to it today so i will get the model number for you.

the first 2 power outages the generater reached 60Hz in 22 minutes, the last time it was at 47 Hz for at least an hour. At that point it was restared twice before reaching 60Hz.

After it reaches 60Hz voltage is good

Change over took place on the first to power outages but not the last

We have UPS that last 70 minutes and the power was out for 2hours or more

Another bit of information the generator starts at 60Hz and when load is applied it drops to 47Hz. The engine was checked and looks good.

Thank you for your responses. Please let me know if I left anything out. Again I greatly appreciate your time. Thank you

Thank you for your help with this issue. We are going to move in that direction. I think our biggest issue was that we could not replicate the problem in testing, however it failed everytime there was a power outage. Thank you again for your help.
