This is the most basic of electrical information. If you have no clue about something so simplistic, this is not the way to find out. Anything we tell you here is undoubtedly enabling you to continue on with something likely to kill you or someone else. Please seek the help of an Electrical Engineer, or at the very least, an experienced electrician.

I do not know how you can score this answer as OFF Topic. It speaks straight to the point of safety.

There are n numbers of posts on this subject (one of the most common guest questions )

try the "search this forum" box with the question. The answer (rather the standard reference) exist with many links esp from craigza (as I remember).

i am feeling a bit civilised today

To begin with aluminum has greater conductivity than copper ,you size your cable to the given load the higher the ampage on the load the larger the cable's cross sectional area

Hey there phillip,

Don't let one slip-up intimidate you from contributing. Being human, and letting those who come here for answers see that, is actually quite a good thing for them to realize. Hopefully when they become the new generation of experts they will not expect perfection, but will encourage discussion from which we can all learn.

I learn new things about what I know quite often here. Enjoy & I look forward to your continued contributions. CJM

What CJMcGill wanted to say is that the electrical conductivities for copper and aluminum are:

Cu: 59.6 106 Sm-1

Al: 37.8 106 Sm-1

which means that copper has greater conductivity than aluminum

Phillps Quote "To begin with aluminum has greater conductivity than copper "

I hope not because if this is true I have to burn all of my books. Maybe Phillip just has it reversed.

LOL :)

I love these how to size questions: www.aberdare.co.za Download the cable facts and figures handbook.

Beware as these standards apply to South Africa and might not apply in your country!

Craig
