07/31/2009 1:32 PM

Hi,

We have one Installation of Cent Pump with product as Petrochem Naptha

with Gas detector mounted near mechanical seal plus flame detector installed in the

beam with line of sight covering the pump

What is the purpose of having both flame detector & Combustible gas detector for such application ?

Regards

Probably there is gas passing in installation, these both items can detect any leakage of gas and any event of fire in advance, and will avoid any loss of life and money.

My guess,

josej,

You really do need both detectors. It is possible that the gas detector will not detect a leak because of air currents or wind that carry the vapors away from the detector.

Given this chain of events a fire could exist while the gas detector sees nothing. A good UV flame detector is a must.

A good number of refineries (in the USA) will have an array of nozzles around packings, seals and critical flanges that are piped to a steam supply with a valve located upstream. This allows the operators to apply snuffing steam to a fire while staying at a safe distance form the fire. The cost of the piping to do this is minimal considering the benefits.

Combustible gas detector (based on LEL, Lower Explosive Limit) tells you that you have a small problem now and possibly a big one in the near future. These are usually set to alarm at 10% of the LEL so you have another 90% to go before you have the big problem of an explosion or flame. Flame detector tells you that you now have the big problem and had better do something about it real quick.

Combustible gas meter- find out whats wrong; Flame detector- real high pucker factor time.

Can the flame detector be useful for short circuiting problems?
