This is a big issue and I suggest you to read a book published by ISA and the book is to guide a instrument engineer to execute a project and also explain the deliverables.

I will find the book name to you tomorrow.

About

The pressure's on. In today's economy, organizations must perform faster, better, and cheaper. Projects have to conform to ever-tightening schedules and budgets. Yet most technical professionals have no training in project management. For years, the construction and defense industries have implemented project management strategies—now this book focuses specifically on techniques proven to be effective in the instrumentation and automation field. Starting with an overview of what every project manager needs to know, this book serves as a practical tool for the instrumentation and automation professional. It defines each unique phase of a project and then provides practical knowledge in areas such as budget and cost estimates, contracts, negotiating, team building, scheduling, and choosing project management software. This book devotes special attention to often-neglected project completion and closeout activities, including tips for how to write and make the most of final project reports. In addition, the book includes a number of appendices that provide sample forms, contracts, and bids used for automation projects.

I'm a process control engineer with 20 years experience.

Can you describe what your project is, please? Also, in what part of the world it's located in? Also, where you'll be working, where you're located?

While I wait foir your answer, some advice: ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS PROJECT ALONE. Basic process control is just about the most complex branch of engineering there is; it's not the hardest, but it takes years to get the hang of it. And reading a book will NOT change that.

Add to that the fact that depending on what you're doing, refineries are the second or third most comple/difficult applications for process control. (Pulp and paper is THE most complex/difficult, and power generation is a tie with refineries).

Take it from someone who worked on an oil platform that subsequently blew up, sank to the bottom of the South Atlantic, and took ten men with it.

If you company needs help, two staffers in my company (that is, my colleague (a soon-to-be Ph.D. in process control) and I (20 years PC experience, plus MBA)) can help you. Send me your coordinates if you like and if this site allows it.

Cheers!

first let me say about myself.

im a final year student doing Instrumentation and control engineering.

and i have not decided my topic yet.I have an idea of doing an industrial based project at chennai petroleum corporation limited(CPCL).i'm interested in either instrumentation of the instruments used in refineries,or the control of the process that is held there.

i have attended im-plant training at cpcl, two times.

and i have studied the process of tamilnadu petroproducts limited as a mini-project.

so i feel i have some kind of experience and knowledge in this feild.

i have been given a time period of one year to complete this project.

also i have learnt the yokogawa's software for DCS cs3000.

with this short exposure in the field im planning to do any kind of project related to my studies.(instrumentation and control engineering).

Livin.,

chennai, India.

Hhhhmmmm ...

There's not much we can do if we don't know what the project is to achieve.

My recomemndation: go to the Process Engineers at the refinery where you want to work and ask them if they have anything you can do for the refinery. I'd also go to the Operations Group (those who operate the refinery, so the refinery's manager or operations manager) and the Maintenance Group (the maintenance manager).

The Operations Group will know about operation problems or work needing to be done to operate the plant better (more production, less expensive production). The Maintenance Group will know of equipment failures, such as what kinds of instruments always fail and where. The Maintenance Group might be interested in finding better ways to maintain instruments, how they should be installed (for example, where in a pipe), and where they can be used (for example, can a given instrument be used in a hot area). The Process Engineers will know what the Operations and Maintenance Groups know, and they'll also know how the refinery can be improved.

That's my advice to get you started. Good luck to you, my friend. Instrumentation and process-control is an interesting and exciting field to be in.

Hi Dread,

I m glad to hear someone in the refinery.

I am currrently doing some basic understanding & studies of how the processing of Oil & Gas work in both the platform and refinery - especially on condensate issue faced by both when using their instrument gas/air. This is equally importance for the instrumentation, maintenance & operation engineers.

Hope you can share and enlighten me on this aspect?

Would appreciate you can email me at joshualee@norgren.com.sg

And just a reminder: DO NOT DO THIS PROJECT ALONE!

Always work with someone qualified and who works at the refinery.

Cheers!

Hi again, Livin.

Sorry that I haven't gotten back to you ... I've been busy. :-S

I haven't forgotten you, though. I'll follow this up later this week or on the weekend.

Cheers!
