LED Device - Solar Power and Wireless/WiFi

08/06/2009 3:55 AM

I have an idea of mime regarding the existence or the feasibility of a LED device that can be used in supermarkets to replace current shelf pricing tags. I envisage the device would be about 9cm * 4cm * .5cm in dimension. Allow multiline display together with a small solar panel to keep it charged using the existing supermarket lighting. It would also require some form of wireless update capability. What are your thoughts

What's the risk of them getting nicked?

I have seen these LED price tags in groceries already, mainly in Kroeger's. But I am not sure if they have solar power or wireless technology though.

The later versions are LCD displays (lower power consuption) that run on built in solar cells that run also off the lights.

But the drawback is that they are not backlit so when in the lower or higher shelfs you barely can read them.

Congrats, you got by yourself to an idea that is in fact widespread and proven worthy, exept that you didn't know it was already done.

You are on the right track, keep up the good work.

You reminded me my younger years in the late 70's, my dad took a popular science magazine to home and I read how LCD cells (just recently introduced to watches displays) worked, I read about one magificent piece of hi-tech electronics called "The Microprocessor" and how it could process a few inputs and give you very precisely controlled outputs, do math and guess what else.

I thought "If we could connect the image signal from a TV receiver to a microprocessor and use its many outputs to turn on and off many little LCD points? I guess one day we could have TV sets hanging from the walls like live paintings" I was 10 years old then.

Just think, they can set a low price to get you to take one, and raise the price as you get to the checkout!!!
