Health Care Reform

08/06/2009 11:54 AM

With the debate over health care reform in the US reaching a fever pitch I am curious to hear what our members think about the subject, particularly those who live in countries with universal health care. We hear dire warnings that many of the proposed changes to the US system will destroy our system, that rationing and long waits for surgeries are inevitable if we move away from our for-profit fee-for-service model. How does this square with your experience?

Having spent a great deal of time lately on political forums, I shudder at the oncoming tide of heated crackpot responses you've just invited. (Including this one!)

You might want to save time and ask someone to shut this one down now rather than after the carnage.

(Then again...maybe my fellow CR4-ers aren't the loons I think they are?)

I myself really don't know what is so great about the US system.

Further it looks like a US, Canadian, and Mexican system really.

Certainly it is okay for some operations to be scheduled, and others that are emergencies to be performed right then.

Whenever I had insurance I went to the doctor when I was sick, and when I didn't have insurance, I still had to go to the doctor when I was sick.

Unfortunately when I was dying and really needed an operation, I was uninsured.

Nice of them not to let me die, though I wish I could have paid all the bill after they saved my life.

Now it is likely I'll die before they get the bill paid in full.

Unfortunate that the accountants will have paychecks forever figuring out how much they lost monetarily, by saving my life.

I agree that some changes need to be made, but a reform of the whole system is just a bad idea. But there is a misconception, the health care system in this country is for profit and so are the doctors but there are a slew of non-profit hospitals. If somebody walks into one of those hospitals without the ability to pay and no insurance, they get the same treatment as a millionaire.

What's being proposed (or at least what I've read of it) is a lot more of a government run business than a government regulated industry. It's just a bad idea, did I mention that?
