Friction Applications on Brakes/Clutches

08/10/2009 12:03 PM

I am researching friction applications on brakes/clutches on equipment used in the mining and oil/petroleum industries. Specifically, I am looking for problem applications or heavy-duty applications where a Kevlar composite friction material would benefit user. Can anyone enlighten me and help me in my research?

I researched a product many years back for the U.S. Navy that required a friction material gripping a wire rope. One material I found was called "Bekorite" (not sure of the exact spelling). It was used as a brake material on the San Francisco cable cars.

Try the brake drum of the Draw Works of the Oil Rigs (there are two brakes on this the main brake drum as well as the sandreel brake)

In addition there are the EM Clutches (i think it is called Elmago Clutch)

Did you contact National Oilwell?

What is your objective? What industry are you in? Do you work for a company that makes, "Kevlar composite friction material" products?

Are you looking for new applications/markets?

Are you a student?

Silly question, did you Search GlobalSpec for "Kevlar composite friction material"?

Did you Google: Kevlar composite friction material"?

The company that I am doing this piece of work for developed a 100% Kevlar fiber composite friction material. It's patented. Tribco Inc has customers in many industry sectors but has only scratched the surface of applications. We are always hearing of new applications. I am looking for new applications/markets for our two new technical sales guys.

I will always be a student...of something or other...right now I am a student of friction material.

This may be too commercial for this side. We're more solvers, than buyers.

You might try posting on: Search GlobalSpec.

I have never seen Kevlar friction material used in a brake application, but I have seen and used it in clutch applications with very good success. The application was in 15.5" double disk clutches used in dump trucks & log trucks. Both of these applications, the trucks must start heavy loads on soft ground & up steep grades. It is very important to have a clutch that is capable of slipping as the load is started. The Kevlar clutch facing had the holding power of the ceramic button clutch, with the softness of a rag (fiber disk) clutch. I tried using the Kevlar facing in a single disk application in medium duty trucks, but it did not work very well in that application. The Kevlar clutch lining is very gentle to the flywheel & pressure plate surfaces, and has a very long life.

Thank you for your input. I am so still learning about transmissions, brakes, clutches and finding that I am fascinated by simpling understanding of, say, the mining process and how those haul trucks handle the steep grades and the need for clutches that hold. This product is specifically for off-highway vehicles. Except that UPS puts it in all of their manual transmissions. I hope to get suggestions for new applications. We got a request for a skateboard brake!
