New CAD Program

08/11/2009 8:25 PM

Just downloaded Double-CAD-XT. Pretty powerful for the price (exactly $0.00).

http://www.doublecad.com/Products/DoubleCADXT/tabid/1100/Default.aspx

Apparently, Part of the AutoCAD/TurboCAD family (IMSI). Seems to import a lot of older drawing formats quite accurately, and I can use older symbol libraries (including those I have created myself...)

Apparently, only available in Windows versions- I haven't tried it yet with Wine or VirtualBox.

Are you mainly a *nix'r? I doubt that a 'Dozer would know anything about Wine or VirtualBox.

Just curious.

I am neither. I am a computer user. I am constantly on the lookout for ways to circumvent the limitations imposed by software developers that interfere with actually getting some work done...

At $0,00 it would be slightly cripple. Intended as bait to get you hooked onto the main stream.

I will try it in any case. Thanks.

you're right. the page says:

"We're not constraining printing, saving, file sizes... we're not including untimely time-outs... we're not even constraining the software license -- our free DoubleCAD™ XT can be used for unlimited personal and commercial use.

Our hope is that as you need even more power, you'll consider upgrading to our enhanced DoubleCAD™ XT Pro product or DoubleCAD™ plug-ins as available."

there's always a catch with everything free. but for its features, it's worth the download, I guess.

Yes, it is definitely a "hook" to get you looking at the paid version. If it meets my needs, I might even consider upgrading to the paid version. Working with the free version for a few hours, a couple of comments:

1. The learning curve is minimal.

2. It is more sophisticated than other free CAD software I have looked at.

3. The documentation is pretty good.

As I understand it the point of DoubleCad is that it's an IMSI offering which presents the user with an AutoCad like User Interface, whilst still incorporating some of the better points of TurboCad.

I'm a very low level casual CAD user, but, I started with TurboCad: so I don't think that DoubleCAD offers me anything (although I've had a copy installed since earlier this year). But, for AutoCad users looking for a way out of paying a fortune for their software it's probably a good idea.

For anyone new looking for a basic 2D drawing package, I still think that TurboCad LE (Learning Edition) is a good starting point: this free download (just click on the bulleted item at the top of the linked URL) includes a 271 page book. Although this is only version 4 (TurboCAD is now up to version 16), it includes everything that a casual user would use in a 2D cad package. (The screen shot on that web page showing an electronic circuit diagram is a bit misleading, I would get a schematic capture package for that: try TinyCAD)
