Wanted: High-Speed Hydraulic Pump

08/13/2009 7:00 AM

Can you suggest a pump that can run off an electric motor running at about 10,000rpm capable of delivering 40MPa of pressure as part of a regenerative braking system for a 2 tonne vehicle.

An alternator augments braking & supplies power to vehicles electrics plus running a motor to power the hydraulic pump (via capacitor bank).

I am not certain of the flow required through the pump, but perhaps you can suggest how I might go about this.

Also how efficient would a pump working at these high speeds be?

10krpm is a bit high for a pump. What possibilities exist for gearing down the shaft speed a tickle?

And why can't the regeneration be done electrically with battery storage, avoiding the need for a bulky pump as an energy change agent?

Do you work for GM?

Five steps to do a single step process...

Sounds about right for modern hybrid tech design.

Overly high speeds for hydraulic pumps can cause cavitation and frothing of the oil.It is better to use larger displacement at lower speeds or gear down the motor.

Yes, I hadn't considered cavitation.

I was wondering whether there was a pump that worked a bit like the compressor stage on a gas turbine (only with liquid) - having progressive stages to get a high pressure. And no need to change rotation into reciprocation (as with swash plate, etc).

actually there are high-speed pumps, they were designed in Russia. And there speed is equal to 12000 rpm, the problem of cavitation can be solved by using special coverings on metal or preliminary pumps for getting higher pressure
