Weight-Balanced Automatic Splash Pool

08/13/2009 5:27 PM

I live on a farm in Africa. The idea is to build a contraption out in the veld in which one can have a cool-down splash in semi heated water.

If I use black pvc piping as a reservoir (heated by the sun) with the amount off water in the piping = the gross mass of "splasher(s)" (eg. 2 person = 200kg=200 liter), and connect 2 one-way valves on a large "cylinder" at the highest point of the piping. And the effect would be that as soon as mass are put on top of the "piston", the same mass of water should flow onto the piston. Iow, if a person of 80 kg gets on top of the piston, 80 liters of water should flow into the chamber (with the person).

As soon as the person gets out the cylinder should rise by itself, (low density material like wood?), dumping the water in the cylinder via an external valve and at the same time replenishing clean water via the vacuum created by the rising piston (from an external supply reservoir).

Now what exactly is my question? Would this contraption work? And can anybody give me the technical data eg how long/wide/deep/high it should be.

Im enjoying imagining how this will look, all these people getting wet in the veld?

Sounds like fun to me,all that splashing about oh ffs.........."gross mass of the splasher"

"if a person of 80 kg gets on top of the piston" Ive witnessed such exhuberence....

better still if one person gets on another.........whilst wet of course, then onto the piston thingy, well its bound to work.......sorry bitch of a day

This sounds interesting. A,"cool-down splash in semi heated water".

Is the water that cold? I'm not exactly sure how this all would work, exactly, but, I do think it WILL work.

Can you post a sketch? Give more details?

It would be worthwhile making sure that this contraption isn't an unworkable device of the first kind. Please post a sketch for the forum to comment on.

Thanks for the replies!

The idea is still just a picture in the mind. I do think that I've got it worked out in some ways.

The freshwater inlet should be directely under the silinder so that the heated water would stay "on top" and be let into the chamber first.

What I would do is build a small model and get some pictures. I really cannot do the calculations (maybe I can but I'd rather go on trail/error basis and see what comes out.

If I use standard 35mm pvc piping as resevoir, what does the lenght have to be to hold 200 liters of water?

Leon, hope yer weekend is great!

Your description is pretty fuzzy, and the logic of the weight/bouyancy actuated valves is unnecessarily convoluted. Better to use a tank with conventional valves to fill and empty it thereby minimizing the chance of malfunctions spilling precious water into the soil.

Black pvc pipe laid out on the ground will indeed function as a solar water heater. Insulate under it and put a transparent cover over it to increase efficiency. Just over a meter of 35mm (id) pipe will contain a liter of water, so you'd need .6 km to hold your target amount. Under direct sunlight you could get too hot a product for your purpose - perhaps steam, so be careful and start experimenting with less length and/or bigger diameter pipe.
