Pilot Screws

08/14/2009 7:49 AM

Hello,

To CR4 after a long time..

I have a question. Are there any advantages of a piloted screw other than the obvious one(easier insertion)? We are using the screws in a clamping....does a pilot screw really help? The size of screw in question is M3, will the screw size influence it?

Any clarification will be appreciated.

By "piloted" do you mean a screw that has a reduced diameter at the beginning of the thread that is not threaded? If so, it serves to protect the thread from damage. If the tip of the screw "mushrooms" as in a clamping device, the thread is protected. The "pilot" may be a chamfer instead of a reduced diameter to accomplish the same thread protection.

Ronseto is right about the pilot protecting the end of the thread if you are using it for clamping. If you are just looking for easier insertion & location of the screw it might be better to just counter drill a couple of millimetres of the hole the screw goes into.

Thanks a lot ronseto and Nigh...yes, I got the point.....we actually need protection, so I think we'll go with a chamfer.....
