Shaft Deflection Measurement

08/16/2009 1:15 AM
Dear All,

We are looking to measure and record radial deflection in shaft while in rotation. The measurement should be around 10 reading per secound in range of 0.01 to 5 mm. Can any body suggest suitable method and required instruments for the measurement.

Thanks

Hold a mirror surface (and a dial indictor plunge micrometer, temporarily) -- against the rotating shaft (think spring), bounce laser off mirror to a sufficiently distant target and mark off on the target the range of indications, calibrating image movement range with dial indicator in static mode. Use high speed film or digital camera to record laser movement at speed. Read deflection at your leisure with playback at slow speed.

The shaft is rotating at 50 RPM max, Instrument may be contact or non-contact type. If we hook up computer to instrument to record the data - will be of great help.

One of those sychronous mains motors driving a paper drum, with a pencil attached would do it, a bit like a barograph.
low tech is good.

Are you trying to read shaft vibration or rotor sag?
