Material Selection

08/18/2009 4:54 PM

An aluminum sailboat mast is cast 1100 aluminum .

This grade of aluminum is normally rather soft , inexpensive to

produce , and corrodes quickly in saltwater conditions .

Why not use 2117 aluminum , with copper and zinc added , in

the extruded form , cylindrical ?

Why not?

Does it cost more to use 2117?

Frankly I'd want to throw a little nickel in there, though the copper may be just as good.

I gave a job up where I had a guy climbing a Flagpole to hang decorations for a holiday rig of lights, partly because I had become really afraid that the aluminum flagpole, would break when he was up there. This flagpole may well have been made from the 1100 you speak of. It was also brushed round on the horizontal which seemed to invite cracks.

I believe it is a bit of nickel added to aluminum to create Duraluminum which is used for aircraft skins.

Milo on this forum is probably capable of answering this question, better than me.
