What Cars Meet The Taxi Challenge?

08/19/2009 10:34 PM

The Taxi challenge is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Checker Marathon, and Chevy Impala, are the most successful of the challengers of my era.

Will the Volt be up to the task?

P.S. Crown Royale? some Ford was a competitor. I was tempted to ask what the top ten Taxicabs of all time were, but let it go, and just posted this.

I would prefer the Crown Royal taxi. A few drinks and it takes me anywhere I want to go.

It seems that with the end of the RWD Impala, the Crown Victoria seems to have a lock on the taxies now.The local taxi baron here buys used Florida Highway Patrol cars and converts them to cabs.I do remember the big Chrysler cars as being popular while they were being sold.

No lads, those yellow things over ther aren't taxis. THIS is a taxi! They frequently go round the clock twice before major overhauls.

I have always heard that London taxis were the best in the world. If they are so good, why has no one successfully run any of them in New York City. That place is murder on taxies.

I have seen London taxis in New York. They were privately owned, Every car has been used as a taxi at one time or another, from Mercedes Benz to Cadillac to VW's. I think the most useful of all vehicles used is the mini-van for it's large capacity. Checker was the largest of the taxi companies and they even made a sedan for public sale. Those who owned them loved them. They were roomy inside and would run forever; A true classic.

My second dealership job had a retired German cabinet maker that was now an auto mechanic. He bought one of those Checker Marathons. 307 Chevy engine. He loved it.

The main reason is the RH drive and maybe also the old fashioned appearance would fend off riders.

Hi

the London taxis are virtually handmade. Left hand drive is possible, and I have seen a couple here in Spain. What would stop any serious drive to export to the US would be the price. you could probably buy two or three US cabs for the price that a London taxi would sell for in the US.

London taxi drivers don't have the option, they must have room for a gentleman with a top hat!

This was very sucessfull taxi in Mexico, it is a cheaper taxi. low maintenance car.

Now this is the most reliable and cheaper car used as taxi in mexico.

Taxis must be economical, in New York the cars are big for bussiness people thus taxi fees are high.
