STRENGTH OF MATERIALS, MECHANICS OF MATERIALS

08/25/2009 8:53 AM

Hello there!

I really appreciate if someone could guide me to find out a good collection of solved problems concerning strength of materials/mechanics of materials.

I've had a book by Hibbeler, a masterpiece, but I don't have it anymore and I cannot purchase another one (a bit expensive for me at this moment) so a collection of solved items would be realy helpful.

Thank you very much!

Try The book "Statics and Strengths of Materials" written by Lawrence J Wolf. I found it to be based on real world scenarios, very straightforward and helpful.

There is a series of books called "Schaums Outline" that addresses various subjects. Lots of solved problems are presented. These books were popular by college students who were having trouble understanding the matter contained in the books used by the college. I'm not sure they are still in print; it's been a long time.

yep - I'll second that... for my money Schaums Outlines are the best source of summary information and worked examples around on just about any technical subject. You'll often find them in second-hand shops. Any decent library (i.e. with a good science / engineering section) should hold them also (particularly a university library).

They are still in print, but the second hand ones are just as useful - sometimes more-so as you get a different flavour of instruction compared with recent textbooks, often more direct (both approaches have their benefits). And the worked solutions are a dream when you're having trouble knowing how to approach a type of problem.

Good luck. By the way, I don't know where you are in the world, but you will probably find a local second hand textbook market on the web. I recently bought the Hibbeler text you mentioned for $25 from a site called www.textbookexchange.com.au - I'm sure there will be a local version of it where you are.

Good luck!

GA to you Sir.

Those books are great! I have only looked at them in the Library but they are the kind of book you just cannot put down.

Take care.

There are many books available in India on these subjects. Price is cheaper compared to western countries publishers. Please check any of the web sites of Indian engineering books publishers and you will get number of books on these subjects. Many books are available on line also.

Hi giorgiana,

How are you?

I found a site where I think you can download info' about particular Engineering items or structures on-line. They are all by Hibbeler, and may work out a lot cheaper than perhaps buying a book that you may only need to read a couple of pages or so from? Try this out anyhow, and please let me know what you think of this site please?

Above is the search site. Below is the site I chose to copy and paste for you.

Hi giorgiana,

The thing I like about you is you have taken the time to say "thank you". You would be surprised as how many people, which I must say are mainly guests, who ask a question and are hardly seen again! Very frustrating, especially if like me for instance I have asked reply questions and got nowhere.

Thank you to you and I hope you continue to help others if you have time. Any idea what you want to do in Engineering giorgiana?

Take care and good luck, OK?

I must say that this is the only place where engineers from all over the world have answered me in a very proper manner and very quickly and I owe them all my best regards.

A response as you gave me make me feel full of gratitude toward the person who found a little time for enlighting someone who really needed help.

I didn't know how to transmit how much I'm grateful to you for help but I'm thinking that maybe if someone would need help in this field, I could help also, as you've did it with me.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Hi giorgiana,

Just a quick note............................ Actually it is difficult for me to write a 'quick note' as, it often ends up more of a Novel!

I like this site for the same reasons as you. The members are friendly and 99% of them will always be honest and try to 'let you or me down gently' if we make a mistake. That is the sign of a 'Professional' site!

You rarely get ant 'street talk' because what we say others have to understand, OK? If we are 'relaxing' after a hard few days or weeks perhaps searching we sometimes get into some jokey type of talk. But always good humoured batter really. If you take time to read the new questions, and then the answers given, you will soon see that each has something to offer when it comes to helping with a problem.

There is some very clever members here, and seeing as almost all the requests are related to Engineering in all its forms, there is benefit to you, me, and others that, a reply is given which is on topic, and is understandable, above all things.

Understandably answering a question can help save a lot of time and confusion. That is the main reason for no 'street talk'. That is a 'gang' way of doing things when they know each other and can honestly understand what another says. It is not a Rule, but it only adds to any confusion the OP (Original Post) may have talking about a subject they are not familiar with. Here you can be talking to a 'neighbour' just a few Kilometres away or be speaking with someone whose Native tongue is not English. So the answer must be as clear as possible.

Sorry I went into 'Novel mode' there, sorry! ;=)

OK I will go away and let you breath!

Take care.

Mr dear babybear, Nice talking, and that exactly what I'd like to say, with my GA.

Only I'd like to add that I have a very nice feeling when I reply such a question, and when I realize that my reply was benefit and helpful to the asker.

Hello Abdel Halim Galala,

I hope you are fine my friend?

I have to say I did not have a GA in mind when 'penning' that post!

I agree with your perception on the glad, and nice feeling a helpful answer or reply can give. Personally I feel I have, in some small way, 'achieved' something, particularly if the subject was perhaps not known to me much before the OP posted it.

I will add, that a clearly asked request for help with, if possible the Country of origin, would save so much time and effort. Often the questioner knows completely and utterly what they want! .............. Trouble is, they sometimes find it hard to set a question that is easily understood.......

I thank you Sir!

Take care.

Hi giorgiana,

I think the following 4Shared site is very very interesting to you, just write the name or word(s) of the book or text you need in "Search for" and then click "Search" pushbutton, or click here: 4Shared Strength of Materials & 4Shared Mechanics of Material

Also a good reference that I use is the EIT (engineer in training) reference Manual by Michael Lindeburg.

Did you try the educational institutions? I have gone through a lot of the on line courses of these, and they are informative.

Try this

http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Mechanical-Engineering/index.htm

(In fact go up a level and you may find other subjects too at)

http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/home/home/index.htm

or another one

http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/courses.php

all are free, usually (most of them) in pdf and down-loadable.
