Thermostatic Mixing Valve

08/26/2009 6:52 AM

We have recently had a domestic solar HW system installed. It has 2 thermostatic mixing valves. The water delivered is at a very safe temperature.

Is it possible to adjust the valves to increase the temperature?

If so is there a relationship between turns of the valve and temperature?

Which way (clockwise or anti?) increases temperature?

Ask the installer for the information sheet that came with the mixing valve, if it hasn't been already been tossed in the rubbish. If it has been tossed in the rubbish, ask the installer to get an installation guide from the distributer.

Or you could do it by trial and error. Turn one way, and if the temperature becomes unsafe you have succeeded! Then turn it back to where you started, so you won't get sued again!

Hi Ried

Thanks for your prompt reply! The info sheet was tossed/never supplied and installer not helpful; May have to use the trial and scald/freeze system...

How about checking the manufacturer of the valves/system and googling for some info? Google is smart, it gives some good advices regarding catalogs, cut views, etc...

Clockwise is normally hotter, unless you are in Austalia viewing the control via a mirror...

Keep in mind that for an automatic thremostatic mixing valve to funtion properly it must have continuous flow over the sensing bulb (a lesson learned during an earlier life).

You say, you have 2 thermostatic mixing valves, are they automatic, set to a fixed temp., or are variable, controlled by a thermostat? If they are a true "thermostatic mixing valve then they should be a variable valve, to blend the water to the preset temp. whether it's an adjustable thermostat or a fixed thermistor. Either one will be located on the hot water supply pipe going into the house. If it's adjustable, turn it up to a hotter temp., usually clock wise, if it's a fixed thermistor then you'll need to change it to one with a higher temp range. I've found in past experiences, if you try to control a system like this manually through the isolation/ shut off valves, you end up with the valves battling themselves and shutting down to compensate for "over temp" and loosing any and all benefits of having thermostatic mixing valves. That's what I've seen in the past. And not knowing how your system is set up, I can only tell you this, is a general of thumb. dj

One valve (Bosch) regulates the exit temp of the solar storage tank (evidently it is stored at about 85deg so needs to be mixed down to safe temp) and the other (unbranded) regulates the ulyimate 'supply' temp (mixing solar exit and inst. gas boost)

Since it is currently winter, water is boosted so i have tried a turn (1 clockwise) on the supply valve. Seems to make small difference... but maybe only placebo....

Thanks to you and all respondents. and CR4 team.

Use a thermometer to monitor the temperatures, so that when you do make an adjustment you know whether placebo is working for you.

My experience here is that it takes a while of the water running to detect the changes in the mixing valve settings. Good luck.

hi,

I think the mixing valve is of mech. mixing type valve. The MFG. is probably Honeywell. The valve functions to mixing of hot and cold water to get desired temp. of water to the user.

Now , there is setting knob to adjust the hot water temp, you have to check the direction and set it at desired temp. [ trial and error]

As per our practice the valves are none of use for Solar Water Heaters.

You might check this link, it might help you understand what a true "Thermostatic" mixing valve is and how they are generally controlled. The key word, in the name is, "Thermostatic". And where I come from, that usually means that the mixing valves are controlled by either an adjustable or fixed "Thermostat". dj

Thank you for info.

I am also saying the same and i have used @ 25-30 valves of this type imported from USA, for distribution of hot water from solar system to officers hostel.

But, we and user find them as of little use for getting desired output [pleasure].

When we had the new building built it came with 2 separate hot water systems. Each had a mixing valve installed. When it broke, I went online to a distributer of the product. They were most helpful in obtaining the installation manual for it. Try that rout. Good luck.
