Shifting the Earth's Axis of Rotation

08/26/2009 10:44 AM

In this report they say that the earth rotation is shifting 1.5 centimeters a year in the direction of Alaska, because of the warming oceans. i am not wanting to discuss if it is plausible or not. but what would happen if it did. 10 year, 100 years, 1000 years, etc, about how the environment would change in different places. would Canada be the new Attic. etc. what is your opinion about this.

here is the sit i got the info from.

The earth's axis does change from year to year (and by more than 1.5cm). So far so good.

(google "earth's wobble")

The earth's moon is pulling on the oceans in such a way as to stabilize its axis of rotation. The tides follow the orbit of the moon and climate has no significant impact on the tides.

The moon is about 1/4 the diameter of the earth. It is the largest moon with respect to its parent planet in our solar system. Earth and it's moon almost acts like a double planet system. The gravitational link provides the stabilizing force that keeps the spin of the earth and orbit of the moon in the same plane.

If the tilt did ever shift, however, the equator could end up being the next Arctic zone. Familiar places would become uninhabitable in such a scenario. But tilting the axis of the Earth would mean possible changes to the speed of rotation. And the orbit of the moon would continue to apply a correcting tug in the original plane..

Your post is fine except for the 'because of the warming oceans'
This axis wobbles about all over the shop...who ever balanced this thing must've finished early that day...

What is used as a reference point to measure the axis? IMHO two things are happening:

1. The earth's axis is wobbling

2. The surface or crust of the earth is moving in relation to the axis from tectonic plate movement.

Oh man, somebody always has an axe to grind.

Grant me the serinity to accept the things I cannot change.

The courage to change the things I can.

And the wisdom to know the difference.

Defrosting perafrost on top of volcanic ash miles deep that holes water like a sponge.

I could see the weight rotating the earth off axis because of all the near by land masses that are defrosting. 600 year old village had to be moved in Alaska flooded, kids swimming in alaska in a early August not getting cold yet. strange.

We need to appoint a crack team of radio shock-jocks, FOX news reporters and innumerate retired lawyers to decide if this effect is real or not

An event when two tectonic plates suddenly overlap by 20 meters or slowly move relative to each other will offset the balance and the centre of gravity and axis will shift relative to individual reference points.

The effect will be experienced different at each location.

Next, we are going to be blaming the fact that feral cats have more kittens than domestic cats on Global Warming...Or is it, domestic cats have more kittens due to Global Warming? Del, can you help with the statistics (or, at least, the basic research?)...
