Be Careful Buying Air Conds??

08/27/2009 11:02 PM

I work in the HVAC industry in the sheetmetal side as pressbrake operator, not an expert on the tech side, and im just wondering.i just picked up a second hand air cond .The evap coil frosted up on me within and hour after i first plugged it in.I know the normal reasons why this happens ,but now its running fine and not fressing up at all. i shut it off for 6 hours and ran it again for 2 hours, seems like it fixed itself,The only thing i can see it maybe with moving the unit around and the 20 mile travel in a car 'mixed " the r-22 gas,,,,,any thoughts?.would a dirty cond coil case a fresse as the evap coil looks clean....i ran the unit before i picked it up for a bout 5 minutes,i should have ran it for and hour, now i feel ive been duped...and guess where from?..a 50$ dollar lesson learned the hardway,,BTW..IT looks like it hasnt been even used and its a 10,000 btu fairly new,2003 model ran only 6 months...remote control and all...anyway now im as cold as an iceberg

Sounds like you got the thing "burped" now and the freon has "settled"

Yep, moving & jerking those small units around can upset the mix some....

Sounds like you got it running fine - shoot for $50 bucks you have gotten a "steal"

Technology used in unitary type of air conditioners are simple .If you're a.c is only few years old it should work well. Possible causes for evaporator icing could be:

Shortage of refrigerant, low suction pressure, low return air temperature,

Indoor blower not running, restriction in refrigeration system, dirty air filter, dirty expansion system. Please check these causes and take the appropriate corrective action

My opinion (31 years service): Very slightly low on charge. The ambient conditions, if closely duplicated w/ first time it froze, should produce another freeze-up. One possible way to push the failure that may work: use lowest fan speed, coldest temp. setting and run on a cool night (about 60df would be ideal). p.s. is filter totally clean as well as indoor coil?

Th unit is clean, but im not sure about the cond coil,if this coil is dirty, with this cause a freese up?...its works pretty good tho,it gets my bachelor apt frosty real fast, the coil only frosts about every 4-6 hours, all i do is watch the time and switch to fan mode for a few seconds, switch back to cool mode and the coil clears up in seconds, ready for another 6 hours....HEY...for 50 bucks ,a 10,000 BTU...remote control too...its worth it....i like the new whirlpool models out at cana tire...a new one is 350 -400 with the tax

thanx

Low freon can cause a lower temperature than the evaporator was designed for.The moisture in the air freezes on the coils.Same will happen if the air flow is restricted by a dirty evap coil, or a dirty filter. If the unit has service valves, hook up a set of gauges and check the pressures versus the temperature of the air entering the evap coil. This will determine pretty quickly the cause.

No. If a dirty condenser coil was a possibility, I would've mentioned it - not bragging - but I don't miss much by way of troubleshooting HVAC/R, after a lifetime of continuous improvement learning. Dirty condensers cause high pressures and high temperatures as well as premature failure of compressors and fan(s). Caution: believe it or not, a low refrigerant charge ALSO causes compressor failures- the lubricant inherent in the refrigerant charge from the factory, cannot return well (to the compressor suction) nor does the refrigerant gas. Both cool down the compressor.

I assume that you are talking about a window unit. I noted that you said that the evaporator coil looks clean. Looks can be deceiving. I recommend that you take the unit apart cover the motor and electrics with plastic and go to the local self serve car wash, and wash both the evaporator and condenser coils. Lots of soap and rinse with clear water. Be careful of the fins on the coils the pressure can bend them. Any bent fins should be straightened out. Let it dry for a couple of days. The biggest problem in the HVAC trade is dirt.
