Anyone heard of using autotransformers in lieu of distribution transformers for delta-wye distribution?

The transformer manufacturer cannot produce an autotransformer with different winding configurations.

Be real careful, unlike a transformer the primary and secondary of an autotransformer or variac share windings.

Example; If used in a step down application and the common winding opens, both sides are at the same potential.

Thanks for your input. This would be certainly unusual to do this but I was asked by a collegue of mine and began researching it. Actually, I find no logic in it, it was his statement that supermarkets were doing that. Needless to say, I know more about autotransformers that before and with 45 years experience, I've rarely seen an insulation breakdown on LV transformers when applied in the proper enviorment. Just curious to see if I left a leaf unturned.

By the way, I see your a visitor. I just joined this forum (one of many), and like most of us, need an answer now! FYI, I'm impressed by this one as you guys didn't let your shirt tails hit you in the butt in answering. I hope that I can recipricate! My email is jim@seaboardcontrols.com and if I can help you, it would be my profound pleasure!

No. It is impossible.
