09/07/2009 6:05 AM

we have perkins1300 series 250 KVA generator The frequency is initially 50 Hz on load suddenly drops to 47 Hz, we have changed the ECM, serviced the engine and pressure pump also changed yet the problem persists What could be the reason/s ?

Hi,

Check your entire fuel system, seems to be not supplying enough fuel to cope up load demand. partially clogged up fuel filter etc. one time we encountered in our unit (Perkins 1300 series) fuel injector nozzle not spraying adequate fuel when the hydraulic oil pump solenoid fails. it could be AVR also.

In fact, to tell you honestly, my Perkins unit been replaced with Volvo Penta and ever since the unit was installed the performance is bad compounded with no technical support extended from the supplier.

Take note, my Perkins unit is now sited beside my generator room with only 4,612 running hours due to none-reliable unit and service support, with unsatisfactory performance, it was three times sent to the supplier workshop for repair and encountering the same problem. Most of the unit supplied with in the resort vicinity and in the mainland suffering the same story. if you are in the Mozambique area we are brothers with the same problem. LOL

Kind regards.

Roman

If you want fix frequency you need to change the mechanical Governor control to electronic Governor. The other simple trick is 1. Keep frequency without load at 52.5Hz so that it will fall to 50Hz with load or 2. Reset the throttle on full load so that your frequency is 50Hz at full load.

Check if there is a droop setting on the mechanical governor. It should be set to zero for a single generator.

Also, make sure that the load if small enough for the generator to handle. I had an interesting situation one time. The overall load on the generator was within the machines limit, but it was still slowing down - even with electronic governor. I discovered that one phase was slightly overloaded due to a building expansion. After rebalancing the phases, it worked perfectly.

As long as your frequency control mechanism is functioning properly, the theoretical foundation of your problem is that your electrical load is fluctuating faster than your power unit and or it's frequency controls can handle. The preceeding comments address various different specific means you may need to address your problem, but may or may not apply. Diagnoss that and you will be able to design a fix that works for you.

you should set inital (no load) frequency as per class of governing of engine it should be between 51.25 to 52.5 Hz. & check at up 80-90% load. If the problem persist than Please check the fuel system throughly i.e. fuel filters, Button filters fuel pipes, check the water accumulation at the bottom of the fuel tank, fuel pump, injectors etc.your prolem will be solved.
