ABS rated motors

09/07/2009 11:42 AM

Anyone know what this means? I'm working on a project for electrical shipboard design and was just hit with this. It appears to have something to do with motor effeciency and this is an IEC type project. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Jim

Never heard of it - but I did find this - seems ABS is some kind of approvals board .

Thank you for your very prompt answer. I do a lot of work with the American Bureau of Shipping with shipboard electrical submittals and am in fact aware of "type" approvals. The reason for concern was the motor effeciency rating compared to shaft horse power. Big difference!

Thanks,

Jim

Yes it is American Bureau of Shipping and ABS qualification is common for most components for shipboard usage. Contact your motor manufacturer and they can tell you what models they have that are ABS qualified.

Also the ABS requirements are typically quality related, not just efficiency.

Jim,

It seems that you have all the answers, but is still asking the questions. Are you trying to test this forum?

ABS is the American Bureau of Ships. They are concerned with any number of things dealing with seaworhyness and insurability. Check with them.

Marine duty motors generators differe from those made for application on land. These motors have to conform to certain extra specialities particulary bearings, Body etc should be able withstand the ships roll etc.The enclosure has IP65 protectionnow adaysThese are tested and approved by authorities like ABS,Loyds,DNV ETC.
