NACE and Molten Sulphur

09/12/2009 12:45 AM

I understand that with presence of h2s gas in system we go for NACE Confirmation ( MR0175) but I have seen that with molten sulphur service we are not going for NACE confirmation. Is it a usual practice? Why so ? What doesnt call for NACE in molten sulphur? Thanx in advance

molten sulfur should always be considered to have dissolved H2S in it. There ARE specific specifications for steel in molten sulfur service. Steel tends to suffer from hydrogen embrittlement in this service and should be PWHT and be 'mild steel' manufactured by appropriate methods.

Nickel alloys can suffer from liquid metal embrittlement if the temperatures are high enough. MR0179 is only about H2S embrittlement, not molten sulfur per se.
