Support Standards for PVC Ducts Use in Gas&Oil Installations

09/12/2009 7:48 AM

Please colleagues:

Can you let me know, if there; the electrical standards that permit use underground concrete encased PVC electrical duct banks in Cl I Div I Group D for power, instrumentations and control?

Thanks in advance

Serca

Dear Serca,

PVC is a relatively good choice and does offer insulative nonconductive material for

the conductors of power or instrumentation and control, but in most cases you would

also have to consider the thermal effects of encasing the conductors in concrete which could cause some ark flash problems or amperage build up better backfilled

with gravel and top filled with sand and clay.

concrete encased PVC should be ok as long as the following conditions are met:

  1. The wires carrying power are large enough to keep heat build-up to a minimum.
  2. The PVC is large enough to permit easy pulling of wires; (long radius sweeps, no 90 or 45° turns).
  3. Wires are properly protected, entering and exiting the concrete.
