Air to Open, Air to close is required on a double acting actuator.

Single acting require require only air to open or close, this type of actuator has a spring to return the actuator to its failsafe position.

In double acting valve you need two controlling signals one to open the valve (with its associated solenoid) and the second one is to close the valve (with its associated solenoid), the single acting valve need just one signal to open or to close the valve and the another action you can get it by using spring to return the valve.

double acting actuators are the pressure applied on both side of the piston so as to open or close the valve if it is a linear movement .

other double acting type is rack and pinion type for rotary movement here the pressure applied on two piston in opposite direction so that pinion rotates for opening and closing of the valve. this valve have high torque capacity than single actuator or double acting actuator for linear movement .
