Wall Thickness Calculation - ASME B31.3

Couly you anyone explain me about the significant of 'Y' - co efficient from table 304.1.1 in wall thickness calculation as per B31.3. why this to be considered and reason behind that?

Ok, I will explain something for you, the coefficient Y is used in eq (3a) or (3b) in ASME B31.3 (304.1.2) is wall thicness coefficient.

It is hard to find a t (thicknesses) > D/6 in standard pipes, so choose value of Y from the mentioned table (304.1.1)

may be and I am not sure, there is a smaller pipe size has t>D/6 and it is rarely.

Naif, t will easily exceed D/6 when comes to high pressure small bore piping/tubing. I have a hydraulic system where I need to design the tubing/piping to withstand 10,000psi. I found a book that suggest using chapter IX of b31.3 but the problem is a790 is not listed. Still struggling to get a solution...

Ok, could u please tell us where u need a 10,000 psi with small diameter?

cause this is first time i heared about small dia. with t>D/6

hydraulic lines for control systems! FYI, all pipe less than or equal 3" with sch xxs in asme b36.10 actually has t>D/6.

Hi there,

If the material is not listed in Table A-1 then a prudent approach is to look up the stresses in the material standard or globalspec etc. Use the lower of two thirds yield or one third tensile for your allowable stress.

wall thickness calculation as per B31.3 is minimun thickness?

please anybody tell me about base condition for wall thickness calculation for PMS,...

for example in PMS ,I see that thickness is 15 mm for 52 inch pipe but according to asme code calculaton it is about 9.5 mm...

withch one is correct, please advice me...
