It depends on what you are moving (only the platform, any load on?), which are the bearings that allow platform movement, what is the desired movement resolution (once you are talking about a step motor so, movement in steps...), what you are going to use to connect the step motor to the platform. So, you may calculate the load to be moved and inertia, and check against step motors specifications for speed, size, torque, load capacity, endurance, power consumption, required driver, required command, feedback signal or not, ... in resume, as almost always, please specify better your application.

GA from me for asking the right questions.

To the OP:-

Further to the excellent questions posed by bhrescobar, do you want to used Lead screws, wire ropes and pulleys or what? for the actually movement.

Do you need X only or X & Y axis or also Z as well?

You have not documented your requirements at all well up to now.

Please try to improve in this respect and we can then help you far better.

sir,

its basically a brass platform of (10x3x1)cm having no load on it.we r using rack and pinion mechnism for smooth movement.needs resolution of 0.5-1 mm.plan to use stepper motor so it moves in step. So,if u could suggest the specification of stepper motor for this purpose. Moreover what shld b the pitch of rack and pinion.it shld be in x directn only

You need to mention the distances and speeds needed. Someone quoted 20 meters a second.....thats a lot. Till then we cannot be specific for you.....

Arrick robotics makes a nice system for stepping things. We use thier MD2 for coil winding and for x/y movement.
