Wiring UPS-Connected Appliances

09/20/2009 12:38 PM

Dears;

In our country, due to short fall of electric supply, there is tending to use local manufactured UPSs for domestic use for fans lights etc. The electricians whom do the wiring job for those UPSs in homes normally connect one wire of UPS with common (Neutral) wire of home wiring and second wire connect with those switches with which they control the fans lights etc (with this trick they save the cost for one wire). When local power supply is available, these UPS connected fans and lights work with that supply along with all other appliances (AC hot iron etc) and when local supply is un-available, only UPS connected appliances works.

My question is that is it ok to connect one wire of UPS with local power supply's neutral? For me, the wiring of UPS connected appliances should be isolated.

The one wire connction for off line system of UPS will not affect any circuit or any appliances.This will work perfectly. As per rule this is wrong. If it is on line system the two wire connection and isolation is essential.I thing generally off line is used for home equipments.

Hi,

These type of UPS ( Off line) or Invertors are generally have common neutral wire i.e they are looped with input supply neutral at output socket inside it. Only phase wire is being used for DC to AC convertor. So there is no use of laying extra neutral wire.

For online UPS it is always recommonded to use separate neutral wire. As in case of offices , computer labs etc.

thanks,

Dear Friend;

What's you mean about "Offline" or "Online"? Sorry for my lack basic knowledge.

Two questions have risen in my mind.

1) Now we assume,
if we do a single wire wiring, we switch off the UPS input (220V) breaker (all other home appliance are being working on local power supply on that time), for me there is some noise in neutral conductor which would disturb then the UPS. AM I right? It has been seen that many UPSs malfunctioned and according to my experience, reason is "Single wire wiring". I told many persons to do two wire wiring, they did and never faced UPS break down problem.

2) If we do a single wire wiring (UPS neutral is connected with local power supply neutral) and any time the input two wires of local power supply replace with each other i.e. line is connected with neutral tag of supply and vise versa the what happen?

I am really sorry for my poor English

here is the question that comes to my mind

you have an interruption in the electric supply

and the ups kicks in

at the same time someone in the house

is working on the plumbing main

and opens the line

is the neutral part of that circuits

system ground

does he assume there is no electric being used

there for it is safe to

disconnect the water main to make repairs

I have a problem with this

not for me for the laymen electrician who is

1 fork less than dinner ware

shock me many

but kill me once
