Steam Turbine - Steam Rate

09/22/2009 1:40 AM

I am just looking for a quick idea of an approx steam flow rate that I could expect from a steam turbine driven air compressor.

Assume -

  1. present installed drive is 750kWe
  2. steam inlet P1 = 150psi, with some superheat
  3. steam outlet P2 = 30 psi

I know this is a bit vague, but I am just trying to get a better handle on what the steam flow rate may be. I have 30 tonnes per hour available at 150 psi, being the incremental flow available from the 1st stage of one of our turbo alternators.

Prof - many thanks for that - just what I need. I will run several calcs on different parameters so I can plot steam flow rate against various power and exhaust pressure scenarios.

I take it you are a sugar industry engineer?

regards from New Zealand.

Pleasure. No, not the Sugar Industry, though my home in South Africa is in Durban which is in the cane growing area, and I have done a bit of consulting to the industry. Just get to play with lots of steam turbines etc all over the place.

Visited NZ early this year, what a beautiful country you live in. Could retire there if they would have me.

You have to find the Enthaly diference between enthalpy at p1 & enthalpy at p2.

This will be in kJ/kg. Them divide the drive power by this enthalpy difference which will give you the steam flow rate in kg/sec.

Regards.

Anant.
