Preferred Method of Driving Solid Shank Rivets

09/22/2009 6:53 PM

When installing a row of solid shank rivets. Is it recommended that you drill and cleco all the holes? Then start installing the rivets from the center of the row and work out towards the ends, or from one to the other?

Or is ther another preferred method?

Thanks for your help Ed

That would depend on the project. The place I work at does not Cleco the holes for riveting. Starting from the middle and working to the outside going from one side of center to the other as you go per rivet will help with an even pulldown/seating of the material. But if it is not specified I don't see a great advantage to it.

I saw a TV program on how they make aluminum boats and they clecoed about every 5th hole. Drove the rivets and went back and did the cleco holes.

In aviation work I was taught that with curved repair sections, All holes were drilled and cleco'd prior to riveting. Then the work was checked for dimension and we worked from the center out removing one cleco at a time. This procedure was for repairs where you had to fabricate a new section on an existing airframe.

GA, I too was taught using the same technique, back when I was in A&P school and spelled out in most SRM's I've dealt with. But, back then we still had wood and cloth projects also. Congratulations on the Master Mechanic Award.

What ever happened to explosive rivets? I used them in aircraft school back in 1955.
