Ageing Extruded Aluminum

10/02/2009 1:58 AM

I am wondering if someone could help me with the correct ageing temps and times for ageing extruded aluminum. I am trying to set proper procedures that an old boss left behind and the procedures seem to be incorrect. Every cycle for 6063-t5 material keep giving me 6063-t6 readings with the webster. The temp we run is 390 for 5 hrs and I get 12-13 on the webster readings. My age oven also take about 2 hrs to get to temp. If someone could help lead me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

an open source paper might be of help.

Hi,

what is the "Webster"? Measurement principle?

If you state. "every cycle" what does this mean? One cycle after another or inbetween solution treatment?

With the 6061 and 7075 we used there was an approximate behaviour of bringing from t6 to t7 status after subjecting the t6-material to one more treatment cycle (designed to get from ST to t6).

Refer to http://www.worldoftest.com/webster.htm for more details of Webster portable hardness checking device.

Webster can be used for checking relative hardness of aluminum and definitely not a substitute for Rockwell tester which by far more accurate.

Webster does not provide hardness numbers specifically in A or B scale to realize the UTS of the material.

It is portable, light and amenable rapid checking of non primary items
