Devry's ABET Accredited EET program worth it?

10/03/2009 1:10 PM

I have made kind of a mistake in my eyes, I attended DeVry right out of high school, and now have a degree in Electronics Computer Technology (ECT). I didn't learn much of anything that I already knew and it cost $40k. I have a couple options for me, the first would be to stay at DeVry and go for EET which is ABET accredited surprisingly. This is the only option that will credit my entire associate degree 99% toward my bachelors.

OR....

I can goto Community college, get a degree in Pre-engineering (associates) in two semesters and transfer to Penn State Main campus for EET then eventually EE, or transfer to CAL-U for EET

I'm not sure what to do, should I stay at Devry, or brush it off as a life mistake and start over 40k in debt but that much wiser and go to a state college for EET, so people dont laugh at me when they try to hire me with a degree from Devry

I have worked with several graduates of DeVry and have found them to be highly competent and well educated. BUT...

Why not go for full EE? If you have some math background, a EE would serve you much better in most cases.

School is never a mistake. Even when you think it was not worth it.

I assume u r not working, but if you are, check with your company HR to see if they can / will assist in further schooling.

If you are not working, any accredited course work is better than non. Did u talk to DeVry? Some of the previous course work may be credited by them but you may have to ask. Be pushy, you paid for it.

Have you heard of CLEP tests? Most (not all) colleges accept CLEP testing. Even worse, the courses you took probably are not the type that the CLEP tests for, but it's worth a look. Only you and your college can make that determination.

Start thinking ahead. Make sure you have a plan. Set your goals and move forward staying in line with those goals. "Mistakes" largely happen in the absence of planning. Talk to people. The more info you have, the better decisions you will make. Understand that noone cares about your life as much as you do. Take charge of that.

Live well and prosper.

Dude, wake up and smell the roses. You have already wasted 40k at DeRipOff. For that kind of money you could have been well on your way to a real education. Go to a real school and get a real degree.

Hi,

I agree with the previous post, I have a BSEET from Devry and would recommend you get a true EE degree not the EET. Many companies will not offer a EE position to a EET; some will but your options will be severly limited. Most EET's are considered over trained techs. I do have an Apps Engineering position now but I had to pay my way with 8 years in Technical Service for a rival company. If you are going to do it; then do it right and get the EE degree and forget about Devry.

Are you trying to limit competition by knocking Devry ?

I would go for the EE and then MSEE if I were you. I made a similar mistake and only have an AA but trained myself and was accepted as an Engineer and latter a Senior Staff Scientist because I knew how to make the company rich. The degree gets you hired (but there is a lot of competition) and what you know and do designing Products such as Cardiac Pacemakers in my case gets you promotions and money. So I am talking beyond the scope of a degree, I am talking about a good solid education and aggressive work to make Products that will sell then see how much money and recognition you will receive.

I agree. I am ex navy. a gas turbine tech. I was hired by a switchgear company that designs generation and T&D equipment. I wasnt even done with my degree yet. I was hired right along side a Michigan tech EE grad and U of Wisconsin EE grad, all at the same pay. Me the lil ole sailor! I was green back then, but now that Ive done my fair share of everything lets talk about all the stuff electrical engineers(my self included) dont know... you would not beleive how clueless some of these guys are. P.E.'s ---all high and mighty...dont know how to apply basic troubleshooting skills...and these are the guys signing off on americas infra structure?! Im sorry but I hold fast to the notion that before calculators and Laplace transforms and ferroresonance there is a thing called common sense. Thats what my Naval education-I call it my first Alma mater - taught me. Some of the brightest engineers ive ever seen didnt even finish college and some of the biggest idiots came from top universities, So bottom line the degree dosent make the man, it does make anything actually but a nice wall hanging or toilet paper....You make the man, if you want to be the man. take the steps and it shall be so!

Wow!! I actually learned more from Devry then I did at a reguler University. Anyways you basically learn from the same books: JK flip Flop configurations are all the same don't matter which school you go too. Limits equations equations are solved the same way in Devry as they are Solved in MIT. It all comes down to the individualls, and how they apply themselves to their studies. I seen people that graduate and don't know anything (c students) and i seen people that graduate and are very compitent for what they get at Devry (A students). I graduateted Devry and went straight into a 6 figure technical Job and AT&T. So...
