Normally, in general thumb of rules it is not possible to run a higher load with a lower load driver.

Just like your car. If you have a small car that is capacity to fit 4 persons, do you think it can fit another 3 persons to it?. Even if you can fit 7 persons in to the small car, your small engine will not able to run with that full load, it had to carry.

But of course, if your car have another additional carrier that attach to the back of your small car where the other 3 person sit at the additional carrier that should not be a problem.

Just like your question asked,

Yes, you can drive the 12.5 Horse Power motor with a 10HP VFD provided that your motor must have 6 lead wire and running in Delta Connection. Yes, we have some ways/methode to do the connection using small VFD to run the big motor.

There will be some issues with it.

  • Don't expect the inverter to supply the full load motor current.
  • Don't expect to be able to set the VFD overload setting for the full load motor current.
  • Don't expect the VFD to be able to supply the full starting current. Some form of slow-speed ramp start program will be needed in the VFD.
  • Don't expect the VFD to operate the motor totally without process interruption due to overcurrent trips.

In summary, it is better to either down-size the motor (provided the process load will allow it), or up-size the VFD, its supply fuses and its supply cables to suit.

Could the output shaft be slowed down by gearing, perhaps (many loads, partuicularly fans for example, have a power draw that is proportional to the shaft speed raised to a power greater than 1.0)?

If the load on the motor at 100 % speed is equal to or less than 10 HP and the VFD is never required to operate in excess of 100% speed than you can connect the 15 HP motor to a 10 HP VFD.
