Carbon Molecular Sieve

10/07/2009 2:47 PM

Can anyone suggest how we can check CMS(Carbon molecular seive) of Nitrogen generator unit quality?

Is there any procedure to check used CMS quality?I am facing problem of N2 purity <95 % istead of rated >99.5%.

As per CMS suppliers, we have to replace the CMS as it is damaged. We have checked physically and no abnormality observed.

Can anyone suggest how to check the CMS and if possibly any procedure to convert these CMS to usable?

Take a picture of it using an electron microscope.

Have you checked the CMS for water contamination? Do you use dried air to feed the generator? is the drier (if used) ok? Are the timing / operation parameters of your adsorber correct?

Although CMS is less suceptible to water contamination as for example zeolithic material, a low product gas quality is quite often a result of water contamination.

You might take a sample of the CMS and try to remove moisture by applying heat and vacuum. If the adsorption quality improves after this procedure, you might try to apply it to the rest of the CMS. Please be careful when appyling heat to the material. Make sure that the temperature does not exceed decomposition temperature of your CMS!

Apologies if you have already done this, but what about contacting the manufacturer of the generator.

What type of generator is it? (i.e. Pressure Swing Adsorbtion, single column with timer).

Leaks in the pipework may also affect the purity of N2.

Generator is of PSA(Pressure swing adsorbtion type twin bed type)

Is there any process by which we can make it usable if visually it is looking ok but it is not performing as per design?

First of all you have to identify what the cause of the poor performance is! Then you could check if some kind of re-activation processes are available.

I agree to the comment of guest.

Just to note: A water contamination cannot be necessarily recognised by visual inspection. You could do a spectroscopic analysis if you have no access to a REM.
