Checking Pipe Sizes for Plumbing

10/07/2009 1:16 PM

Hi there..

I have a design drawing (plumbing) and showing the sizes of pipes coming out of the tank goes to the pumps and serving the toilets - wash basins, water closets, shower etc., kitchens etc.. How to check if the size of the pipes are correct?? On what base the pipes are sizing??

Thank you in advance!!

This is just too bizarre: On what authority are you going to "check" if you have no experience nor any clue what to look for??

Did somebody just pull you off of the street and tell you to do this? Are you the office secretary stuck with having to do something that nobody else wants?

What else is being "checked" by unqualified individuals??? If this is for your own house, do yourself a favour and hand it off to somebody who knows what they're doing. Otherwise, you'll surely miss something important and likely wake up to a wet, smelly surprise one morning.

"I am a junior engineer and I am trying to learn some things"

You should have learned this in school.

You should have said this up front, too.

The plumbing code has tables that provide pipe sizes based on the number of "Fixture Units" that each pipe is serving. Each type of fixture has a number of Fixture Units allocated to it (Table). The Fixture Units are then summed and pipe size is determined accordingly (Table). These tables might give you a general idea if branch lines are sized correctly, but you may need an in-depth analysis if you have alot of fixtures and/or long pipe runs. Also, mains sizing requires additional consideration (such as diversity of usage).

I see from your question you have had very rude reply which is totally out of order, as this individual is not prepared to share any of his thoughts or experience I dont see what business he has on this site (or is it he is looking for advice and tips off people and not prepared to share his !!!). If you ask me this is selfish. really there is no need to dent the confidence of anyone on this site as this is open to anyone it is particularly bad that he has to target a young Engineer to bully. You often find that people like this have the worst level of skill in their trades and an attitude like this is used as a defence mechanism to justify their roles in life.

I would like to see the controllers of this site to respond to criticism like this.

Good luck in your search for answers, if you keep asking questions you will improve your knowledge and increase the threat of becomming better than the author of that rude post.

Well done to the guys who posted positive reply's.

Flower:

Let me please express my sincerest apologies. I did not mean to insult you nor to thwart your enthusiasm. My comment stemmed from seeing so many unqualified people coming to this forum for "quick and easy solutions" to issues which they really shouldn't be becoming involved in. Just like a layperson self-medicating themselves, there is great danger in this. It's like giving a child a loaded gun.

As a junior engineer (mechanical, I hope), it's likely that you do have the proper background. However, if you happened to be some unfortunate individual who was simply given a task which you knew absolutely nothing about (which is what your post implied), you can see that it would be a different story, can't you? Anybody providing an answer could have also conceivably handed over that loaded gun.

In any case, welcome to the profession. I wish you the greatest success in your career.

Domestic plumbing in the UK might use 15mm Ø copper for taps, etc., with 22mm Ø for the supply to the bath taps or for longer runs. 28mm Ø might be found in the coil of the hot water cylinder.

In general, aim for a maximum of 3m/s for all liquid pipework. If it's higher than this, the pipe is too small.

Flower... It would also help to know where you are located. On alot of subjects things are quite different from the US and Europe (for example). I might have information which might be relevant to the US, but if the poster is in the UK, I keep my mouth shut and let our British compatriots work with the problem. If I KNOW you are in the US, I will jump right in with my two cents worth.
