when does excessive vibration within machinery is not always apparent?

Depends on what is 'excessive'. Usually it is audible as in "that doesn't sound right".

Modern machine monitors however can detect vibration anomalies much sooner than the human ear, especially in noisy environments.

It all depends on the application.

Use an accelerometer in various places of your equipment.
