Circuit Breaker Performance

10/14/2009 3:48 AM

high voltage circuit breaker performance is affected by atmoshperic conditions such as atmoshpere heat etc...especially with altitude the ratings change or not?

IT MUST BE COMPLY WITH UR DATA SHEET......GO THROUGH AMBIENT RANGE AND THAT RANGE MUST BE COMPLY WITH BREAKER. IF BREAKER COMES WITH ENCLOUSER THEN GO THROUGH ATEX CERTIFICATION WHERE IT MUST MENTION THE AMBIENT TANGE.

U R RIGHT ATMOSPHERE INFLUENCES BREAKER PERFORMENCE.

Definelty the rating of the any High / medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers will come down due to increase in altitude. Every switchgear manufacturer will give this data. For example a siemens switchgear which is rated for 15KV at normal conditions (normal alititude is 1000 m) if elevated to 2000m its capacity decreases to 13.5 KV approx. This correcton factor is as per ANSI and IEEE. But there is a continous review happening with in IEEE about the correction factors.

You may refer to the standard for exact correction factors ANSI/IEEE C37.20.2
