Ooowww that's an interesting one....

Would a subcutaeneous capsule be a suitable size device? i.e. similar to the ones used for micro-chipping animals...

In such a device there could easily be a pressure sensor and transmitter / reciever, same as with a micro-chip identity device...

I'm sure that with suitable filtering the heart beat could be deciphered from the background muscle and tissue 'noise'?

John.

Yes it would be exactly what we are looking for. Do you have any idea where we could find one or who to contact regarding this. We have located a company that does a similar thing, however only in small laboratory animals. The chips can be inserted into the animal, however the receiver is located below the cage - what I would be looking for is something that has a range of about 2-3 metres. Any idea's?

Here at NASA we just finished working on adapting a commercial wireless unit for space - but it's the wrap around the chest kind that you see commonly in gyms.

I suppose that if you could build a tiny acoustic sensor powered by some kind of RFID type technology, you might be able to make it work. That's a lot to squeeze into a rice grain sized pellet, though.

How long does it have to last? I've heard of swallow-able sensors that do this sort of thing, but they don't stay in the body long.

It would need to last indefinitely. Something that would be able to monitor a large animal's heart rate with the receiver being approximately 2m-3m. Any more idea's?

They can be had - for humans! I am wearing an external one at the moment. Depending on the outcome of the analysis of the data captured, my specialist has suggested that a further step might be to insert one subcutaneously, which is akin to what is being suggested.

Talk to a qualified veterinary surgeon with this on board?
